ATTENDANCE POLICIES

Every minute of a student’s time at school is important.  Students who are absent for even one day miss valuable instruction time and can easily fall behind in school. Punctuality and regular attendance are required by Education Code 48260 and fundamental to good citizenship and a quality education. Satisfactory academic progress is dependent upon regular attendance. Parents are requested to plan vacation trips and absences for personal reasons to correspond with school holidays so that student learning is not disrupted.

Students are expected to ask the teacher for work missed due to an absence.  Parents should call the attendance office on the first day of any absence.   Calling the attendance office to report an absence eliminates the necessity of writing a note.  The number to call for reporting absences is (626) 965-2461.  If a call is not received, an excuse note written by the parent or guardian must be presented at the attendance window before the start of the first class on the day you return to school following the absence.  The excuse note must be dated and include the following information:  Student’s name, dates of absence, reason for absence, and signature of parent or guardian. 

Attendance office will issue a re-admit slip which must be signed by all of your teachers and left with the last teacher required to sign the re-admit slip.  Students must obtain a re-admit before school the day they return from an absence.  If this is not done or you do not bring a note from a parent, you may be assigned lunch detention.  Students who return without an excuse and phone contact has not been made with parent or guardian will receive a TRUANT re-admit.  Student is still required to clear the absence the following day.  If an illness required a student to be out for a long period of time, the school should be contacted to arrange for homework or for a home teacher.

TARDINESS

The expectation is that students will arrive at school on time.  Students who arrive late miss valuable instructional time and can easily fall behind in school. They also miss important socialization time in the morning with their peers.  Students arriving late to school after the tardy bell rings will be issued a “Tardy Slip” by a Giano staff member positioned in front of the Giano campus during the first 5-7 minutes of each school day.  Any student who arrives at school after that time must report to the attendance window for a “Tardy Slip” prior to going to class.

9th Time+: SART/Parent Conference

HABITUAL TARDINESS OR ABSENCES within a school year will require a parent conference and SART contract.  EXCESSIVE TARDINESS OR ABSENCES WILL BE REFERRED TO School Attendance Review Board (SARB) FOR FURTHER ACTION.

*Not being in class when the tardy bell rings is considered tardy

**Habitual tardiness may result in the loss of privileges
