GATE / Honors Program

GATE Identification Process in California
In California, students may be identified for the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program through a variety of criteria designed to recognize exceptional academic potential, creativity, and leadership. While specific processes may vary by district, the common pathways include:

  • Standardized test scores (such as SBAC or district benchmark assessments) indicating high academic achievement.

  • Teacher or parent nominations based on observed advanced thinking skills or creativity.

  • Cognitive ability assessments, such as the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) or Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT).

  • Portfolio reviews, work samples, or classroom performance that reflect a student’s readiness for advanced learning.
Once data is collected, a district committee reviews multiple measures to determine eligibility for GATE placement.

GATE Support at Giano Intermediate School: Integrated Honors Program
At Giano Intermediate School, GATE students—and all students seeking academic challenge—are supported through the Integrated Honors Program offered in English, History, and Science classes. This program is designed to elevate learning beyond grade-level expectations and provides a rigorous academic experience through:

  • Accelerated and enriched curriculum that promotes critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.

  • Project-based learning that encourages real-world application of knowledge.

  • Emphasis on discussion, analysis, and academic writing in English and History.

  • Hands-on inquiry and experimentation in Science.

  • Opportunities for leadership and independent learning, fostering student ownership of their academic journey.

While the Integrated Honors Program is designed to meet the needs of GATE-identified students, it is open to any student willing to accept the challenge. Participation requires a strong sense of responsibility, self-motivation, and a commitment to consistent effort. Students are expected to engage deeply with content, meet high expectations, and contribute positively to a collaborative classroom culture.
