CAASPP
What is the CAASPP?
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is the state’s testing system for public schools. Middle school students take the CAASPP each spring to measure their progress in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. In 8th grade, students also take the California Science Test (CAST).
Why is the CAASPP Important?
-
It shows how well students are meeting grade-level standards.
-
Results help teachers and schools improve instruction.
-
It gives families a snapshot of their child’s academic progress.
-
Scores help identify students who may need extra support or enrichment.
-
At Giano, CAASPP data helps guide our school goals and student supports.
When Does Testing Happen?
-
Testing window: Typically March through May.
-
Students take the tests during regular school hours.
-
Each subject test is completed over multiple days, with time built in for breaks.
How Can Parents Help Their Child Prepare?
✅ Encourage good attendance—especially during testing weeks.
✅ Make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before testing.
✅ Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning.
✅ Practice positive talk—remind your child that they are ready and just need to try their best.
✅ Use practice tests at home (available on the CAASPP website) to get familiar with the format.
After the Test
-
Results are mailed home by the school district, usually by late summer.
-
The score report shows if your child met or exceeded standards in each subject, and how their performance compares statewide.
-
You can meet with teachers or counselors to review scores and plan next steps.
Final Note
At Giano Intermediate, we believe that all student can. The CAASPP is one of many tools we use to celebrate progress, identify needs, and prepare your child for high school and beyond.
